About Midge Pippel
My art reflects my love of the coastal environment of Anna Maria Island, Florida where I live. Landscapes, flowers, animals, and abstracts are influenced by the colors of my tropical surroundings. Nature inspires me with its amazing color palette, such as the turquoise blue water of the Gulf of Mexico; white sand beaches; magenta flowers; and yellow-orange-sunsets. My nontraditional use of paint colors on traditional subjects create fun and funky works of art, such as a sea turtle painted shades of turquoise and blue. This explains why people often describe my style as cheerful, bright, colorful and sometimes funky. My original work is created on Arches professional watercolor paper or Master Craft stretched canvas using only archival and professional grade products. Many of my mixed media pieces are painted on wood surfaces or canvas and then embellished with iridescent glass beads, tiny pearls, sea glass, and a coat of non-yellowing/UV protecting clear epoxy resin. Other nontraditional painting surfaces I use are pieces of weathered dock or drift wood and salvaged white-washed fence pickets. Whether painting landscapes on canvas or mermaids on old wood, each piece is created with a love of design and the interplay of light and color.
